ARDROSSAN war hero Corporal William Savage has been honoured locally with his name being added to the memorial at the Garden of Remembrance in the town.

But it took nearly three months before William’s mother was informed that her son’s name had been added.

Cpl Savage was tragically killed in action five years ago in Afghanistan whilst serving alongside Fusilier Samuel Flint and Private Robert Hetherington.

Recently the Herald has told how William’s mum and sister have been trying to get a new development at Stanley Road named in his honour but getting his name on to the War Memorial was one of the things that his mum Isobel wanted.

Isobel told the Herald how she still hasn’t had anything through from the council to let her know that his name is on the memorial in Glasgow Street.

She said: “I still have had no word from them but they did send a letter to Patricia Gibson apologising for not informing me!

“I think that this has not been handled very well or very sensitively on my part.

“Patricia (Gibson) said she sent me a letter in February.

"I think I would have remembered that. I have every other letter she had sent me.”

William’s family are hoping to place a plaque in William’s memory at the new Stanley Road site and MP Patricia Gibson has written to the council to see if he can be honoured there on the site dear to his family’s heart.

North Ayrshire Council apologised to Mrs Savage this week.

A spokesperson said: “We were originally contacted by Patricia Gibson MP about this matter and were delighted to help.

"We completed the inscription on January, 30, 2018.

“We can only apologise that the family were not informed that work had been completed and will investigate how this happened.

"We do hope the family are happy with the inscription.

"We are sure it will provide them with a great deal of comfort and, of course, pride.”

The spokesperson added: “With the help of the Territorial Army, a bench and plaque for Cpl William Thomas Savage was installed at the Dasher memorial gardens in Ardrossan on 2013.

“We can discuss any future plans with the family further.”
