TWO corridors were sealed off in Ardrossan Academy for more than a day amidst concerns over asbestos, the Herald understands.

The passages were closed “as a precautionary measure” on Monday, May 21 after it was noticed that roof tiles were damaged.

An Academy parent contacted the Herald concerned that the corridors had been closed due to the risk of asbestos. However, North Ayrshire Council would neither confirm or deny that the woman’s fears were founded, although the corridors were reopened the following day.

The mum, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Two of their corridors have been blocked off because one of the roof tiles have been damaged and they’re worried about asbestos.

“They sealed the tiles down last summer and they tried to hush down this. But now somebody’s broken one, they’ve had to close off the corridors.

“It’s atrocious that these kids have been moved. If it’s that dangerous that they need to close the corridors, then why are they keeping the kids there?

“It’s shocking because the council keep putting this new school back, but they’ve got Auchenharvie looking like a Hollywood sign.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said on Monday: “As a precautionary measure, we decided to close off two corridors in part of the school after noticing damage to some of the roof tiles.

“These have already been repaired and we are confident there is no risk to anyone’s health.

“We are currently carrying out tests to ensure the corridors can re-open as expected tomorrow (Tuesday).”

The council later confirmed that the corridors were reopened on Tuesday.
