A TEENAGER has been sent to a young offenders institution for selling ecstasy to 13-year-old girls.

The 17-year-old, who can’t be named for legal reasons, earlier admitted selling the Class A drugs.

The ecstasy pills – which had an owl logo – led to six teens being taken to Crosshouse back in February.

The Dreghorn teenager, was caged for eight months when he returned for sentencing at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week. The teenager previously pled guilty on April 16 to a charge under Section 4(3) (A) of the Misuse Of Drugs Act 1971.

The court heard that the girls were with four friends at the Riverway RetailPark on February 24. They left the group and went to buy ecstasy from the 17-year-old behind an abandoned building.

The group then went to a house in Kilwinning where they took the red and green tablets, known as ‘Trip Advisors’ due to the owl logo. Some of the children became unwell and all six were taken to hospital.

Following the sentencing, Procurator Fiscal for North Strathclyde Laura Mundell said: “This case is particularly concerning because of the ages of those involved and the potential for harm.

“There is always a risk that people may suffer illeffects through taking illegal drugs and the risk to children is greater as their bodies are still growing. “Illegal drugs, which can contain a variety of contaminants, can damage the brain, heart and other important organs.

“Anyone who has taken these substances and feels unwell is advised to seek medical treatment.

“I would ask that anyone who has any information on the supply of drugs contact police on 101 or Cr imestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

On Saturday, February 24 Irvine police said three 13-year-olds who had become unwell and had been taken to Crosshouse Hospital.

A further three children, also aged 13, were also taken to the same hospital shortly afterwards with similar symptoms.

All six teenagers were kept in hospital overnight for treatment and observations.

The 17-year-old was later arrested and charged.
