A 93-year-old veteran captivated local pupils with memories of his time in India in the 1940s.
Neville Mitchell was an RAF wireless mechanic during the country’s liberation from British rule. A 22-year-old Neville documented this period in history on his handheld Kodak camera.
More than 70 years later, Neville’s spectacular pictures have toured the country and are currently on display at Kilbirnie Library.
The nonagenarian visited St Bridget’s Primary last week to talk to P6 and P7 pupils about his time in India. Mr Mitchell, principal teacher at St Bridget’s, said the kids “loved it”.
He added:“He [Neville] was brilliant with the kids. They were all engaged and asked a lot of questions about what life was like then.”
Fiona Burke from Kilbirnie Library said: “He took these photos during service with the RAF and sent them into the One Show. They’ve been all over the country. They’re now on display in our library.
“He had them in a tin and he decided to show them for the 70th anniversary.”
Neville Ramsay: View from India Gate and the Red Fort: A Collection of Photographs Documenting the Indian Independence is on at Kilbirnie Library until June 15.
