The Queen’s Coronation in 1953 was celebrated by local schoolchildren in Stevenston, as one of our readers fondly remembers.

Ardeer Primary School held a fancy dress parade in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne.

The parade started at the shore and finished at the grounds of Ardeer Rec, where revellers heard speeches from Provost Morrison and local councillors. Prizes were given for sporting events and fancy dress.

The picture was sent to the Herald by former Ardeer Primary pupil Freda Yarr from Saltcoats, who can be seen dressed up with an ‘off the ration’ sign.

Freda said: “Everyone helped to gather the sweetie wrappers.

"The egg tray on my hat was representing the eggs being ‘off the ration’ which used to be one egg per person per week [at Ardeer Primary].”

Freda was able to identify the following people in the photograph: Eric Johnston (Ardeer Primary) dressed as a footballer, Nessie Gilmour (Ardeer Primary) as a flower girl, Elizabeth Cooper (Stevenston Higher Grade School) dressed in a white dress trimmed with red and blue, Andy Lambie (Stevenston Higher Grade) dressed as Old Mother

Riley, and John Nicol

(Ardeer Primary) in the back.
