NORTH Ayrshire & Arran MP Patricia Gibson called on the UK Government to ban the sale of animal fur during a Westminster debate sparked by a petition signed by almost 110,000 people.

Fur farming is banned in the UK and European Union (EU) regulations ban the import or export from the EU of cat and dog fur and products containing their fur.

However, the UK still allows imports of millions of pounds of other animal furs each year.

Mrs Gibson said: “The public is appalled by the suffering caused to animals by the fur trade. Given that fur farms were banned because of the cruelty inflicted on animals, it is hypocritical to allow the sale of real fur in the UK.

“I urge the UK Government to implement a ban as soon as possible.”
