A GROUP of local parents have called on North Ayrshire Council to open the area's first Gaelic nursery.

Following on from a successful baby and toddler group in West Kilbride, the organisers now want the ‘next logical step’ in Gaelic education to take place.

In a statement, the group said: “We’re a local group of families who have now submitted a request for a Gaelic medium nursery for our children for the 2019 nursery intake, to North Ayrshire Council.

“It is also worth noting that during 2017/2018 we have built up a very successful Gaelic baby and toddler group which currently runs twice weekly in the Barony Centre in West Kilbride.

“We have made the above request due to the fact that our children are moving towards nursery age and as such, the provision of a Gaelic nursery facility, is the next logical step in our children’s Gaelic education. ”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm we have received a request for a Gaelic medium nursery and have invited representatives of North Ayrshire Families for Gaelic Medium Education to meet with our Early Learning and Childcare Expansion Programme team to explore the options available to both parties.”

The group added: “We would like to hear from more people interested in having a Gaelic nursery set up in this area. In addition, we are especially keen to hear from expectant parents and parents of children between 0 and four years of age.

“A warm welcome awaits all those who would like to join our group.
