Shoppers at Tesco Kilbirnie have until the end of June to vote for one of three projects to receive a cash boost of up to £4,000.

Barrmill Conservation Group, North Ayrshire Amateur Swimming Club and Lochwinnoch Nursery Class are all in the running for a Tesco Bags of Help grant.

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork to launch the community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in stores awarded to local projects.

Barrmill Conservation Group, a sub-group of the Barrmill and District Community Association, is a community garden development project.

The group hopes to receive funding to develop the existing community garden as a place to host horticultural and environment related community activities and events, and to become part of Scotland’s Garden Scheme.

North Ayrshire Amateur Swimming Club, based in Glengarnock, will use the funding to update competition equipment and purchase medals for winners at fundraising galas.

Outdoor development is the aim of Lochwinnoch Nursery Class. There are hopes to provide a stimulating and safe place for youngsters to play and put outdoor learning, environmental engagement and physical activity at the heart of the village.

Tony McElroy, head of communications for Tesco in Scotland, said: “To have awarded this amount of money to thousands of groups all over Britain is a fantastic achievement – and it’s all down to our customers.

“Bags of Help continues to be a great success and it’s a real privilege to see community projects thriving thanks to the funding.”

Voting is open in Tesco Kilbirnie until June 31. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out each time they shop.

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £52 million to more than 16,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop.

Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.
