FOUR Garnock Valley youngsters recently took on a mammoth challenge - all in the name of charity.

Mark Winkler, 14, and friends Zac McKinley, Owen Wilson and Lewis Logan got together on Sunday, June 17 and played four rounds of golf back-to-back to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care.

The brainchild of Mark, who is a pupil at Garnock Community Campus, the event started when they teed off at 3.45am and the foursome played right through until 8.30pm, raising over £800 and counting in the process.

Taking place at Kilbirnie Golf Club, the event was a great success and money was raised in memory of Mark’s gran, Anne Bell, who passed away last year after a short battle with cancer. The club and the boys’ school also helped with food to keep them going and donations from teachers.

Mark’s mum Terrie spoke of her pride and said: “Nobody asked him to do it, he said ‘Mum, I’m doing this’. It’s great to see kids that age do something positive and he has made his gran proud. We are all quite touched.”
