Residents have hit out after Kilwinning library was targeted by vandals.

The library, which has recently been refurbished, had several roof tiles smashed and its walls defaced with graffiti last week.

North Ayrshire Council said while the damage could have been a lot worse called it a crime against the community, while Police Scotland have urged anyone with information to get in touch.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “It is always extremely disappointing when mindless acts of vandalism occur as this is effectively a crime against the whole community.

“Fortunately, the damage at Kilwinning Library is not too severe and has been limited mainly to roof tiles and PVC cladding.

“We are grateful for the public’s support in helping us to keep all our buildings and open spaces free from vandalism and we would ask anyone who is aware of, or witnesses, such behaviour to contact the police on 101 immediately.”

Secretary of Kilwinning Community Council Nairn McDonald said: “We’re all a wee bit disappointed, there had just been a lot of money spent in the library so to see it vandalised is upsetting. They had smashed slates on the roof, and tried to set fire to it so there is a bit of fire damage as well.

“But it’s just disappointing given how much has been spent on the library. We’re hoping the library can get in touch with these young people and see why they did it, as there’s obviously going to be some sort of reason behind it, maybe acting out or maybe something else, but to make sure it doesn’t happen again there’s a discussion that needs to be had.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We received a report at 10am on Thursday, July 12 of damage to the roof of Kilwinning Library.

“Enquiries are still ongoing and if anyone has any information then contact police on 101.”
