A man was seriously assaulted by a thug with a baseball bat in Saltcoats yesterday (Tuesday, July 24).

The 48-year-old was walking on Eglinton Street, near to Melbourne Terrace, at around 12.15am when he was approached by a man brandishing a baseball bat.

The man attacked him, then made off up Eglinton Street towards Windmill Street.

The victim was taken to Crosshouse Hospital where he received treatment for serious arm and hand injuries.

The suspect is described as white, slim to medium build and was wearing grey shorts.

Detective Constable O’Neil from Saltcoats CID said: “This was a vicious attack and we are carrying out extensive inquiries including door to door and checking all available CCTV in order to trace the man responsible. 

“I would appeal to anyone who saw the man responsible in the area or witnessed the attack to get in touch with police.
