An Arran grandmother has published a children’s book for charity starring her beloved West Highland terrier.

Alison Page wrote The Westie Fest, a fun and colourful story set around a canine Highland Games on the Isle of Arran. The book is being sold in support of Mary’s Meals and stars Corrie, a Westie based on Alison’s 13-year-old dog of the same name.

Alison, 55, said: “What gave me the idea was whenever I came back over to Arran there were always lots of Westies on the ferry. I thought it was like a Westie convention!

“It gave me the idea of a ‘Westie Fest’, all of these Westies coming together – there must be a story here somehow. It’s a lot about Arran, it’s very Scottish.”

Alison is hoping that The Westie Fest will become a series called Corrie’s Capers. Sales of the book, which is illustrated by artist Kirsty Oxley, will go towards Mary’s Meals.

Alison, who is the Arran ambassador for Mary’s Meals, said: “Because I’d done so much work on Arran with the schools over the years, I’d been looking at different ways for fundraising.

“I’ve never, ever done anything like this so I felt completely out my comfort zone but I learned loads. I decided to self-publish because I wanted to keep control over the story and the content.

“People are being so positive and lovely about not just the story, but the illustrations. Kirsty’s produced some lovely illustrations.”

So, what does the real Corrie think about the book loosely based on her life?

Alison said: “Oh, she knows all about the book. I read it all to her as I was writing it!

“My goal was to have a story written while my grandchild was still young and I still had my Westie.”
