THE planned statue for Saltcoats footballing legend Bobby Lennox will be erected soon - and the committee have revealed where it will go.

Tireless fundraising efforts have been on the go from the team behind the statue campaign and the fruits of their labour were expressed to their loyal supporters last week when they explained exactly where things were.

A spokesperson for the committee said: “Apologies for our lack of activity on a social media front, however we have been working hard behind the scenes and as such are able to update you today.

“In terms of finance, to use a good Scottish phrase the statue [is] ‘bought and paid fur’ let us take this opportunity to thank every single person who donated for the incredible generosity shown, without you this would not have been possible.”

The statue campaign has been ongoing for nearly two years and one of the main questions from locals has been where are they going to put it.

The home of the statue has finally been revealed and the committee explained and added: “The committee had a very positive meeting with North Ayrshire Council a few months ago in which we gave them our proposed site, that site being Countess Stree as voted by the public in our online polls, in which the officials present all supported our proposal assuming there are no structural or underground issues and we are now waiting on NAC completing their final phase of checks to confirm this.

“So that is where we are I would like to express our gratitude to NAC for their fantastic support during our period of consultation with them.

“And a final word of thanks to you guys the supporters for helping us achieve this fitting tribute to our local hero well inside our target time scale of two years! We hope to bring you final details of the unveiling etc in the near future.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “This is a fantastic project and we hope that everything will be finalised and the statue will be on display very soon.

“We are enjoying working with the group, elected members and designers and will continue to engage with them ensure the statue is welcomed by the community and is completed in an appropriate manner in terms of location and design.”
