TWO young cousins were left shaken after one of them was injured by a car in Stevenston and the driver seemingly drove away.

Sophie Beadie, 12, and Kayden Lindsay, 11, were on their way to buy sweets when Sophie was knocked down near the traffic lights at Ardeer Services on Saturday, August 10.

According to the children, the driver rolled down his window and asked if Sophie was ok then left.

Sophie’s mum Claire Beadie said: “The fact that an adult can do that, I’ve just lost all hope in the humanity of people. He should have got out of that car and comforted my baby.

“I can’t get it out my head that he’s out there still driving – she could have been killed.

“She’s got really bad whiplash. She’s been up at the fracture clinic for her arm. The x-ray wasn’t showing a break, but there was a bone fragment there. If that’s not a miracle, I don’t know what is. She was so lucky.

“The fracture clinic consultant has advised that it’s ligament damage which will heal with care and [by] trying to use the left arm as much as possible without straining further. She was given a sling for support but the whiplash on her neck doesn’t help.”

Following the incident, the shaken cousins went back to Kayden’s house.

Kayden’s mum Catherine Hampton said: “My son and niece went to the garage to buy sweets. They both walked back up chalk-white, shaking and in shock.

“My niece told me she got knocked down by a car at the traffic lights. Obviously I phoned police and ambulance as the man rolled down his window asked if she was ok and left.

My concern to police was that he asked if she was ok and never got out the car or phoned police. Obviously, her adrenaline was going, and she was in shock.

“The kids are still in disbelief of what has happened. My son got the fright of his life – he said he thought Sophie had died. They still talk about it, think they’re still shaken up.

”It is believed that the car involved was a dark blue 4x4."

A spokesman from Police Scotland said: “There has been a crime report of careless driving and enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Saltcoats Police Office on 101, quoting incident number 3527 of 11 August.
