The countdown is on for a major chainsaw carving event in North Ayrshire.

Garnock Valley Carves will see 10 internationally acclaimed chainsaw carvers sculpt magnificent wood creations in the space of just a few hours.

The event takes place on Saturday, September 8 at Beith’s Manse Field from 10am-4pm and the build-up has already seen the unveiling of an eight-foot wooden bear in the town. The sculpture, named Woody by locals, is a memorial to the suffering endured by performing animals, and was created by Pete Bowsher.

Pete returned to Beith last week for a taster session ahead of the main event and carved another bear out of a log in just two hours.

Norrie Brown from Beith Orr Park Neighbourhood Watch, the group organising the event, said: “In time we hope this annual event will increase in popularity and it is intended to appeal to young and old from far and wide.

“There will be additional exhibition stands both in the marquee and on the field where visitors will be able to be ‘hands on’ to make items, and also have the opportunity to learn new skills.”

Creations carved at the event will be for sale by auction on the day. Some of the carvers will bring previously completed carvings which will also be available for sale.

It is recommended to bring cash as the carvers will be unable to accept cheque or card payments.
