A SALTCOATS hairdresser raised money for North Ayrshire Foodbank by offering struggling families ‘back to school haircuts’ for just £1.

Donna Curran wanted to give families who are struggling financially affordable haircuts for their children starting back the new term. The mum from Saltcoats provided her services at Ardrossan’s Church of the Nazarene on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week (August 14 and 15).

She was joined by her brother Mark Roy, a barber, and friend Donna from Dee Dee’s Cuts in Ardrossan. Over the course of the two days, the trio managed to raise £25 for the foodbank.

Donna came up with the idea of £1 haircuts for foodbank users after seeing a similar offer in Irvine’s Vineburgh Centre.

The mum of five told the Herald: “I basically seen the ladies in Irvine doing haircuts for £1 so I thought ‘Actually, the Three Towns are more deprived’, so messaged my friend Gemma at the foodbank to see if it would be an option for the people who use it.

“I know what it’s like to have nothing. I’m just lucky now I’m financially comfortable, so I thought why not help others?

“We ended up doing some of the parents as well. “It was nice, we all had a wee chat and a cuppa.”
