TWO iconic buildings in Kilwinning will be taking part in this year’s Doors Open day.

The event will see dozens of buildings opening their doors, including Kilwinning’s Old Parish Church and the Abbey clock tower and Heritage Centre.

The Old Parish Church (formerly the Abbey Church) was built in 1774 and is home to historic and modern stained glass windows, the Eglinton loft and the Cole-Hamilton screen.

The church also has a 121-year-old Forster and Andrews pipe organ, which needs a complete overhaul, estimated to cost nearly £250,000.

Church organist Jim Walsingham said: “Over the weekend of the September 8/9, I will be playing every hymn in the church hymnary. This should take around 9 hours, so I’ll be playing three sessions, Saturday 10-1 and 2-5 and Sunday 2-5. Donations to the organ restoration fund will be most welcome.”

At the Abbey clock tower and Heritage Centre, visitors can climb the spiral staircase to visit the town bells as well as the interior of the clock, with panoramic views from the roof.

Kilwinning Heritage will provide free guided tours. Opening times: Saturday, September 8, Church 10am-5pm, Abbey Tower 11am-4pm, Sunday, September 9, Church 1-5pm, Abbey Tower 11am-4pm.
