A BOWLING club greenkeeper was saved after the fast action of fellow bowlers when he suffered a heart attack at the weekend.

And the kindness of the bowling community shone through as players at the annual Q and L Triples at Ardeer BC raised £600 to install a defibrillator at the club following the incident.

Shortly before play started on Saturday morning, volunteer greenkeeper Michael Farrell took ill on the green.

But fast thinking from member Hugh McGoogan and visitor Andy Wardrope saved his life.

Hugh carried out CPR on Michael whilst Andy knew that the nearby Ardeer Community Centre was home to a community defibrillator.

He raced across to get help as they waited for the emergency services.

David Wyllie, a member of Ardeer BC, was there on the day and hopes that other clubs will follow the lead of Ardeer who will be getting a defibrillator fitted.

He said: “Everybody that was playing chipped in and we got about £600 and that will go towards a defibrillator.

"But I think it would be a really good idea if all of the clubs did this for older people.

“You never think about it until it happens.”

David went on to explain how Hugh saved Michael’s life.

He told the Herald: “Hugh McGoogan, he did the CPR. If he hadn’t been there, then he would have been away.

“Andy Wardrope was the guest who knew the defibrillator was at the

Ardeer Centre and the boy from there came over to use it.”

Michael was then taken to hospital to further recover.

The bowling club now hope to have the device fitted as soon as possible.
