A group for bereaved children is holding a triathlon on Saturday, September 29.

The fundraiser is in support of Sam’s Angels, a group set up by Barbara Henry from Ardrossan following the sudden death of her daughter Samantha in 2015.

Samantha passed away from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) at just 27, leaving behind a daughter, Paige, two. Since then, mum Barbara has been raising Paige and recently started Sam’s Angels, a group for young children suffering from bereavement.

All the money raised at this weekend’s triathlon will go towards helping the children who attend Sam’s Angels.

The event starts with a swim at Vikingar in Largs and will continue with a cycle to Saltcoats and then conclude with a 10k run from St Matthew’s Academy.

Barbara said: “To start off with, it was just family and friends, but it seems to have grown arms and legs. We reckon between 30-40 are taking part.

“Some of the kids are doing it as well. We just wanted them to be part of it all. The kids will be getting a medal as well.”

Since launching in the spring, the number of children attending Sam’s Angels has almost doubled.

Barbara said: “The group has really, really helped Paige. They had a talk about bullying recently and that seemed to help a couple of the kids.

“We’ve started to get therapists in. We’ve had a pet therapist, the next is a music and drama therapist and then a play therapist.

“If any of the kids feel they need a wee one-to-one, we’ll pay for that. All the money that we get is going back out to the kids.

“It’s really overwhelming with how kind people have been. How kind and generous people have been to us is amazing.”
