PARTY goers have been trying to snap up a piece of Three Towns history - as the iconic sign from the Metro Nightclub was posted on online auction site Ebay.

All the money raised from the sale will be given back to local charities and with less than a week to go until the auction ends, the top bid sits at almost £2,000.

First posted last week by local businessman Roger Woods, the sign has since received over 60 bids and caused a bit of a storm on social media as locals and former revellers reminisce about the renowned party spot in Hamilton Street.

He explained how the sign was almost binned and that the interest has left him shocked.

Roger of Invincible Fire and Security, based in Ardrossan, was contacted by Jag Singh, owner of the Metro building, following concerns about the safety of the sign and asked if he could remove it.

Roger said: “We were asked to move it via our cherry picker following the storms and Jag said that he wanted rid of it so it went in to one of our vans but it was taking up quite a bit of space so the guys were asking what we could do with it.

“I told them to put it into the skip at the site of our new build next to Asda as it was taking up the space and we were going to leave it out for a guy who collects steel.

“I laid it out and it wasn’t until I did that I saw the size of it and me and my wife thought we could stick it up on Ebay.”

Following its listing on Ebay, the bids have been flying in and at time of going to print, the top prize for the one metre high letters stands at £1,860.

Roger got a shock when he saw the bids coming in, he added: “I couldn’t believe it. I just thought ‘wow’.”

The auction is set to finish on Sunday afternoon and once the sale has been concluded the money raised will be going to local good causes.

Roger has asked if Herald readers would like to nominate a charity they think could benefit from some of the money raised to get in touch. If you know of a worthwhile cause, email editorial@ardrossanherald.co.uk using the subject line ‘Metro Sign Charity’ and explain your reasoning and we will pass these on to Invincible.
