Police have expressed concern about youths dropping objects onto buses from a Saltcoats overpass.

Locality officer Sgt Ben Brizell was referring to Inspector Colin Convery’s monthly report at Saltcoats Community Council this week when he revealed the concerns. But despite this, the officer said that Inspector Convery had described September as “a very positive month in terms of policing issues in Saltcoats”.

Speaking about antisocial behaviour, the sergeant emphasised “a pattern of reckless conduct” on September 20 and 21 when youths were reported to be dropping objects onto buses on Canal Street.

He added: “Enquiries are ongoing by the locality policing team with significant input from the campus officers. We deal with the crime that’s occurred but any things like this with young people, we’ll forward that to the relevant campus officers in their schools, to try and pass a message through targeted inputs and general awareness to young people.

“It’s just trying to make them aware of the consequences of their actions. They might think it’s fun dropping a stone on a car, however what happens is the car loses control and crashes into another car and serious injuries can go from there.”

Inspector Convery’s report also revealed that during September, local police received 16 reported assaults, five of which were related to domestic matters. There were no other crimes of serious violence during this period.

A total of 14 people were charged with being in possession of controlled drugs during the month. Three break-ins at commercial premises in Saltcoats were reported within the past week, though no property was stolen.
