Residents in the East End of Glasgow are being warned not to buy televisions 'randomly offered for sale' after a series of cons.

Police said several members of the public have contacted them after buying televisions from men in white vans.

After paying the fraudsters, they have been found to be faulty or not what they paid for.

The people responsible have been approaching people in car parks, shopping centres and petrol stations in the Dalmarnock, Mount Vernon and London Road areas by men, described as white with Irish/Scottish accents.

They have been driving either a white Fiat Doblo van or white Citroen Berlingo van.

It comes after we reported that men were operating in a similar manner in East Kilbride.

The men appear friendly at first but become intimidating.

Sergeant Jane McNair, Shettleston Police Office, said: “It might be tempting to buy something like this in the lead up to Christmas but please remember the old saying ‘if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is’, as it has been in these cases. You won’t be getting the bargain you think you are.

“No matter how convincing the seller sounds, we would urge people not to buy from them and contact police as soon as possible with the location and the registration of the vehicles involved. Importantly, people should also be aware that if the goods are found to be stolen, they may be subject to criminal proceedings.

“Anyone with information regarding these incidents, or then men responsible should contact Shettleston Police Office via 101 quoting reference number 1849 of 30 October 2018. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”
