A special exhibition has opened at North Ayrshire Heritage Centre, focusing on everyday life as the First World War was drawing to an end.

The exhibition gives visitors a further chance to commemorate those who died in the Great War, following on from the events marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the conflict earlier this month.

Called ‘North Ayrshire Reflects’, it features a range of beautiful outfits which have been kindly lent by Dalgarven Mill, Museum of Ayrshire Country Life and Costume, including a nurse’s uniform and a Tommy cape.

Paintings by local artist Debbie Allan-Sutherland’s are on display, featuring images of the RAF which was founded in 1918.

And there is a wide range of everyday, household items which would have been in common use a century ago. Also featured is an interactive display from the Ayrshire Film Company, who were awarded Lottery funding for their ‘World War One and The Three Towns’ digital media project.

This project engaged people across Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston, both young and old, to explore the soldiers who left for war, those who were left behind and how the war changed the towns.

These films include Ardeer’s role during World War One, the story of Saltcoats war hero Alexander Cameron Slator and “Shot at Dawn”, and the campaign to pardon those who were executed in the line of duty. And from November 24 until December 19, a dramatic poppy cascade featuring more than 4,000 hand-knitted flowers, created by Dreghorn Library’s Friday Knitting Club with help from knitters across North Ayrshire, will also be on display at the Heritage Centre.

Councillor Louise McPhater, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “The North Ayrshire Reflects exhibition gives us an insight into life a century ago and what our predecessors were doing as the First World War came to an end. “While the exhibition touches on the war, it also pays great detail to the lives of those back home in North Ayrshire, as well as their stories.

“I’m sure there will be something of interest for all visitors and is a real opportunity to reflect on the world-changing events of 100 years ago.”

The exhibition at North Ayrshire Heritage Centre, Manse Street, Saltcoats, will run until the middle of January 2019. The centre is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and the last Saturday of every month from 9.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm.
