POLICE are on the hunt after one of their vans was targeted as they helped in a life-threatening medical emergency.

Between 11.30pm on Thursday, November 29 and 12.45am on Friday, November 30, a marked Police van parked on Pollock Crescent, Kilwinning was targeted and it's windscreen was smashed.

The police unit had attended the street to assist the Scottish Ambulance Service with a life-threatening medical emergency.

With the person taken to Crosshouse Hospital, the officers returned to their vehicle and observed the damage.

Chief Inspector Colin Convery - Area Commander for North Ayrshire, said: "This vandalism meant that a marked vehicle has had to be taken off the road until the windscreen can be replaced, and as such is unable to respond to priority incidents or assist those in need.

"This kind of act, especially given the consequences, is grossly irresponsible. An emergency repair is currently being carried out."

Police Scotland are appealing for anyone with information on the incident to contact them on 101 quoting incident 3909 of the 29th November or if they wish to report anonymously they can do via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
