Police have thanked the public for their support in making the streets safer over the festive period.

The annual ‘Safer Streets’ initiative saw an additional focus on safety while shopping and partying and this year from Friday, December 7 until Wednesday, January 2.

Chief Inspector Colin Convery, Area Commander, said: “We work closely with our community planning partners throughout the year to keep people safe and during the Christmas and New Year period to provide extra reassurance to those enjoying the festive cheer.

“This year with additional financial support from North Ayrshire Council we were able to deliver enhanced coverage in the main town centre areas over Christmas and New Year by providing additional officers to ensure the safety of shoppers and late night revellers.”

Working alongside the North Ayrshire Council Licensing Standards Officer police conducted inspections of licensed premises to ensure compliance with legislation and to support staff.

Officers conducted joint inspections on taxi and private hire vehicles operating in the area to ensure all had the relevant licences and were meeting the standards expected.

Advice on preventing robberies was also issued to drivers, taxi companies and to business premises including off sales and bookmakers.

Officers distributed purse bells to shoppers in Saltcoats, Irvine and Largs to raise awareness on theft. High-visibility patrols were conducted throughout the area with officers proactively targeting those involved in criminality and intent on causing disorder.

Joint visits were also conducted with the North Ayrshire Council team to remind particular householders about the consequences of antisocial behaviour.
