A STEVENSTON councillor has spoken of his ‘concern’ about the possible closure of the swimming pool and fitness suite at Auchenharvie Leisure Centre.
Labour’s John Sweeney represents Stevenston and parts of Saltcoats on North Ayrshire Council.
He spoke following the announcement from the council about the plans for the new Ardrossan Campus, which includes moving the pool and gym to the new facility.
He urged that those who live in Saltcoats and Stevenston must be involved in any consultation.
Cllr Sweeney said: “North Ayrshire Council has to be commended as it continues to be ambitious for its young people and the ongoing investment in the schools’ estate is evidence of this ambition.
“There is no doubt that a new school in Ardrossan is needed and is most welcome. However, the inclusion of leisure facilities, at the expense of the existing provision at Harvies is clearly a concern to me as it will be to the people of Stevenston and Saltcoats.
“All three of our local towns face similar challenges and we cant jump into a project that benefits one over another.
“No one can deny that the facilities at Harvies need upgraded in the medium to long term but we need a meaningful engagement and consultation on the Ardrossan campus proposal, including the people of Stevenston and Saltcoats who must be given the opportunity to express their views on the future of Harvies.”
