A double from Scott Sinclair and a debut strike from Timo Weah - who even got a flash of the disco lights for his troubles - eased Celtic into the fifth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup. Sinclair recovered from the early set back of seeing his first-half penalty missed to netted a goal in each half as Brendan Rodgers celebrated his 23rd successive Cup win with the Parkhead side.

It was a sluggish start from Celtic with Olly Burke making his debut but looking very much like a player who has featured only six times this season. The Scotland internationalist was asked to lead the line in the absence of Odsonne Edouard but it was a fairly pedestrian start to the game.

Anthony Ralston was first to sting the palms of Airdrie keeper David Hutton in the opening minutes when he got forward before cutting inside but for all that Celtic dominated the early exchanges, there weren’t too many clear cut chances.

Sinclair scorned the best of them after he stood up to take a penalty just after the half hour mark. Emilio Izaguirre drew the ire of the Airdrie players after he had been tripped by Christopher O’Neil in the box with Scott Brown and Sean Crighton having a forthright exchange of views. In any case, Sinclair’s low kick to the keeper’s right was saved by Hutton who guessed correctly and dive to push the effort wide.

Sinclair was at the fore of another decent chance minutes later when Ralston cut the ball across the face of goal only for Sinclair to hit his effort high and wide at the back post. All was forgiven shortly after. Burke’s sclaffed attempt brought out a save from Hutton but the rebound fell straight to the feet of Sinclair who bundled the ball into the net.

Ryan Christie tried to double Celtic’s advantage with a free-kick that was tipped over the bar before Scott Bain, handed the gloves for this Cup run, had to produce a scrambled double save from Kyle Wilkie and Leighton McIntosh on the cusp of the half-time whistle.

Callum McGregor almost added a second when he forced save from Hutton just after the restart before Sinclair added his second of the day. Dedryck Boyata rose to power a header from Christie’s corner that seemed to come off McIntosh. Hutton’s reaction save only served to palm the ball out to the feet of Sinclair who stuck the ball high into the net.

The Englishman thought he’d claimed a hat-trick when Burke’s turn and shot on the edge of the box was parried again but his effort was ruled offside.

Nir Bitton came off the bench for the last ten minutes of the game, his first appearance in almost a full calendar year - the beginning of February was his last involvement after sustaining knee ligament damage.

There was more to come, though, with Weah pouncing on a ball from Boyata and turning a low drive into the net.
