A new book investigating the history of printing in an Irish town through spectacular vintage posters has a strong connection with Saltcoats.
Listowel: A Printer’s Legacy has been compiled by Irish historian Vincent Carmody and tells the story of printing in North Kerry between 1870 to 1970 through the medium of advertising.
The book captures the days before radio and internet when advertisers promoted products and events through the printer. Listowel’s original printer, Robert Irvine Cuthbertson, was born in Saltcoats 1859 and the book features old photographs of the town from the 19th century.
Vincent told the Herald: “The original printer came from Saltcoats and as you will see I think he may have learned his printing with one of the papers which you are associated with. Reading will show you that his brother Hugh, who died in 1872, worked as a compositor with the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald.”
