POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in the Saltcoats at the weekend.

Around 12.30am on Saturday, March 2, a 36-year-old man left a pub in Countess Street in the company of another man.

An altercation with the man then took place which resulted in the victim being punched causing him to fall and seriously injure his knee.

Members of the public came to the assistance of the victim who was taken to Crosshouse hospital where he required surgery to treat his injuries.

The suspect is described as in his 40s, of medium build and wearing a white top.  

Police were made aware of the incident on Tuesday, March 5.

Detective Constable James Wales from Saltcoats CID said: “The victim has been left with a serious knee injury and it is vital that we trace the person who assaulted him.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area in the early hours of Saturday morning and witnessed what happened to please come forward.

“I would particularly like to speak to the members of the public who came to the assistance of the victim.
