A CARE worker who failed to report her colleague slapping a patient has been placed on a warning for 12 months.

Shannon Robertson did not inform bosses her co-worker at Canterbury Care Homes Limited's Greyfriars Care Centre in the east end had allegedly slapped two patients between February 27 and March 2 last year.

When one of the patients told Robertson they were going to tell their mother about the incident, they were told "your mother is dead".

The Scottish Social Services Council said her behaviour showed her fitness to practise was impaired.

It said: "Service users have the right to expect that they will be treated with dignity and respect and protected from harm by social service workers that are responsible for their care.

"As a social service worker you have a duty to act in the best interests of the service user at all times in your dealings with them.

"This includes taking action, or assisting to take action, when the conduct of your colleagues causes harm, or places service users at risk of harm."

However, the board opted to place Robertson on a warning after taking into consideration her lack of previous incidents or any issues since, as well as her "insight and reflection" into the case.#

A spokeswoman for the home said Robertson no longer worked for the home and insisted an internal investigation concluded no slapping incidents ever took place.

She added: “We have robust whistle-blowing policies and procedures in place to safeguard residents and staff.

"These were not followed by the individual reported to the SSSC, who no longer works for the home.

"When the matter was raised it was thoroughly investigated and there was no evidence to support the allegation.”
