An Ardrossan supercentenarian, thought to be North Ayrshire’s oldest resident, celebrated her 106th birthday at the weekend.

Isabella Avery, known locally as ‘Tibbie, was born in Aberdeenshire in 1913. When Tibbie was born, Herbert Asquith was Prime Minister, the US president was Woodrow Wilson and the country was a year away from the First World War.

Tibbie moved to Glasgow at around age 20 to be near an aunt. While working at West Kilbride Hydro, she met a local man, John, who she went on to marry and have two daughters with. The family settled in Ardrossan, where Tibbie has lived ever since, latterly at South Beach House.

For her birthday, Tibbie’s family took her to Largs for the day.

Granddaughter Karen said: “She likes fish and chips and going to Largs.

“She worked on the Clyde Coast Buses as a conductress for years. She loved going round that area. Everybody liked her so much. They used to tie things at bus stops for her. They would leave things like flowers, cabbages, turnips and rabbits.”

When asked about her secret to a long life, Tibbie’s daughter Yvonne said: “Probably porridge and being happy; having a positive outlook on life.”

Happy Birthday, Tibbie!
