Twin schoolboys living with type 1 diabetes are both up for an award for helping to raise awareness of their condition.

Ethan and Joshua Grove, 10, have each been nominated for a Diabetes UK Inspire Award in the Young Person’s Outstanding Contribution category.

The Glencairn Primary pupils were put forward by one of their teachers, Lorna Frew, who also has type 1 diabetes and understands what the boys go through on a daily basis.

The boys’ mum, Caroline Grove, said: “I’m just really, really proud, especially when it was someone else who thought of it. The only problem for me is that they’ll be up against each other. They’re stars, they just get on with it and don’t let diabetes stop what they want to do.

“They’ve got great support at school. The school makes sure that it doesn’t affect any part of their life so they’re doing everything that other kids get the chance to do.”

Lorna added: “Last session the school had a day when there was a visitor from Diabetes UK who explained all about diabetes. The boys got up in front of all of their peers, including older children, and explained what was in their diabetes kit bag and what they do on a daily basis. That took a lot of courage to do that.”
