The eagerly anticipated North Ayrshire Primary Schools track and field athletics championships were held at the home of hosts North Ayrshire Athletics Club last Thursday and we were there to capture some of the action.

A record 24 schools from throughout North Ayrshire and Arran descended on the track to compete against their peers to be crowned school champion in what is now the fifth year of the event.

Individual medals were given out to both male and female primary 7 pupils across four disciplines, the long jump, shot put, 80m and 600m with points going to their school.

North Ayrshire Athletics Club athletes dominated the podium with Dalry’s Jessie Caig and Caledonia’s Dylan Gee bagging four out of the 8 golds available between them .

But it was Shannon Brown’s gold on the long jump that helped her school, St Peter’s, lift the school championship award.

A strong well organised Castlepark finished a close second with Dalry just behind. The weather was kind and a great day was had by all.

A special thanks to everyone involved in making the event such a great part of the school sports calendar.
