WORK has started on a new Stevenston visitor attraction related to the Napoleonic Wars.
Development of the site of the former Nelson Mount Cannon Battery will see the area made accessible for visitors. Commencement of the work follows campaigns by local councillors Jimmy Miller and Jim Montgomerie to have the site honoured.
The site, which has become overgrown over the years, had four canons during the Napoleonic era.
These were located as a defence from Napoleon’s army attacking the coal mines of Stevenston and Saltcoats. An official opening of the new visitor attraction will take place in the near future.
Councillor Miller said: “The view is absolutely awesome. I think it’s going to be good for the Three Towns.”
A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “Grounds maintenance works are currently under way to clear area around the battery and a fence is being installed for safety reasons. Picnic benches will also be provided for public use.
“This will help to enhance the visitor experience to this area of historical importance, as well as improving the site for local residents.
“Works are expected to be completed within the next few weeks.”
