Primary 2 children at from Hayocks found themselves behind bars in March 2004, but not because they had been particularly naughty in the classroom. The youngsters were willing “jailbirds” on their visit to Saltcoats Police Station.

Prince Edward was greeted by a crowd of almost 100 when he officially opened the acclaimed new Radio City complex in Kilbirnie in 2004. At the Garnock Valley venture, the Earl of Wessex met some of the local primary school pupils.

A cow on the run from a Saltcoats’ abattoir caused chaos as it made a desperate bid for freedom in March 2004. Commuters on the main Glasgow to Largs line were held up for hours after the animal darted onto the railway line and officials decided the beast was too agitated to be approached. When it headed towards Stevenston firearms officer shot the unfortunate animal dead.
