THE fire which took hold of a battery recycling plant in Kilwinning is now "under control" according to fire chiefs.

However, emergency crews remain at the scene of the blaze on Byrehill Place as they continue to dampen down the embers. 

Area commander Ian McMeekin provided an update on the blaze which initially broke out at around 10pm on Monday, April 8.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) have remained at the scene, alongside Police Scotland officers, in the days which have followed.

Residents and those living in the surrounding Pennyburn area have been advised to keep their windows, doors and vents closed.

Forty firefighters battled the blaze when it was at its peak, though only two appliances remained at the scene on Thursday afternoon.

Area commander McMeekin said: "Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire within a recycling centre on Byrehill Place, Kilwinning.

"Two fire appliances are in attendance and work remains ongoing to gain full and safe access to the site to extinguish the fire.

"The fire is under control, and dampening down efforts are continuing.

"We continue to work alongside partners to minimise the disruption to the local community, and bring this incident to a safe conclusion."
