Troon's RNLI lifeboat was launched on Thursday night following reports of a kitesurfer in difficulty.

The volunteer crew were alerted at 8.32pm by Belfast Coastguard to the Barassie Bay area north of Troon harbour.

The crew launched in their inshore lifeboat Sheena, and made their way to the scene to join police and coastguard rescue teams from Ayr and Ardrossan.

On arrival, emergency services observed that a kite surfer had made their way ashore, but in fading light and rain showers, while further enquiries were carried out, a search was initiated in case another person was in difficulty in the water

With a search completed and nothing else found, the inshore lifeboat was able to return to station where it was made ready for service with the assistance of the shore crew.

If you see someone in difficulty at sea or on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
