Meet the 2009 Saltcoats’ Queen Of The Sea Antonia Henderson and her Captain, Daniel Moore, who were selected at the end of April that year. Antonia was set to be crowned at Melbourne Park on the seafront in the summer.
A Stevenston youngster returned from the 2009 Scottish National Swimming Championships with seven medals. Jordan Hughes, 12, took part in the competition held in the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh and proved extremely successful in his age group.

Muay Thai fighter Alan Weaver fought Billy McGill in Grangemouth on April 4, 2009. Alan, from Stevenston, who trained at North Ayrshire Muay Thai gym in Rennie Place, Saltcoats, stopped his opponent with an explosive left hook that rocked the Hamilton fighter, resulting in a first minute KO.
Primary four and five pupils at St Bridget’s Primary School in Kilbirnie filled 100 backpacks with educational materials for children living in poor communities around the world in April 2009. They filled them with pencils, sharpeners and even clothing for the kids as part of the Backpack Appeal, a project administered through Scottish International Relief.
Stevenston’s Gary McIntyre, 22, cycled 240 miles to John O’Groats on his BMX bike for charity. He raised £170 for the Glasgow Simon Community, who help the homeless.
