STRONGMAN Davy Ballantyne, the devoted dad who dragged a 120kg anvil up Arran’s Goatfell in support of diabetes research, has been shortlisted for a JustGiving Award 2016 in a record breaking year for nominations.

The North Ayrshire Council bin man carried out the herculean challenge in May to highlight the struggles faced by his 10-year-old daughter Roisin, who lives with diabetes.

Now Davy has been recognised for his daring feat after being one of three people shortlisted for a JustGiving Endurance Fundraiser of the Year award.

Davy, 55, said: “It was just kind of straight out the blue, we didn’t even know these things existed. Everyone I know seems happier about it than me.

“It’s good to be nominated but to me it’s more about exposure for the charity than me being celebrated. I didn’t do it for that. There’s another couple of people nominated there with me who deserve to win it. It’s quite a nice thing that folk nominated you and it is a nice thing to know I’m in the final three out of so many thousand. As long as it highlights the charity though, that’s the main thing.”

As the Herald reported previously, Davy took 26 days to drag the 19 stone anvil up Goatfell. His mammoth challenge raised over £15,000 for the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 22.

You can vote for Davy until midnight on Wednesday, October 12 at www.justgiving.com/awards/2016/voting.
