TWO sailors were rescued by a Royal Navy warship after their dinghy capsized as they headed for Arran.

The men, in their late 20s, had set out from Largs on Tuesday for a two-day trip and planned to sail around Ailsa Craig in the 16ft dinghy before heading to Lamlash, Arran.

They got into difficulties a mile and a half off Ailsa Craig and capsized. The Coastguard contacted Royal Navy warship HMS Blyth, which was about three miles away at the time of the call, heading for the Mediterranean.

The mine-hunter launched her sea boat to recover the two men who were cold but otherwise uninjured.

Commanding officer Lieutenant Commander Mark Redmayne, explained: β€œIt was very fortuitous that we were passing at the right place, at the right time. They were recovered by our sea boat and looked like a pair of drowned rats.”
