AN ARRAN bar manager has been banned from driving after he was found more than twice the drink drive limit with his car stuck in a hedge. Trevor Helliwell, 39, of Ormidale Hotel in Brodick, appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week where the court heard that officers had attended at the A841 near Brodick on May 11 and noted that the vehicle in question was in a difficult position - specifically it was within a hedge. Helliwell was spoken to and a blood sample was taken and a reading of 119mg per 100ml of blood was recorded where the legal limit is 50mg. Peter Murray, defending, said that his client was a married father and worked as a bar manager at the Ormidale Hotel earning £155 a week. He said that he had no previous convictions and that there was no excuse at all for his conduct. He explained that he had been out with friends, drink had been taken and stupidly he tried to give them a lift home. Helliwell was spoken to by the police and cooperated fully with them. Sheriff Livingston said: “You were almost two and a half times the legal drink drive limit at the time and it appears to me I should impose a disqualification of more than the minimum.” He was banned from driving for 14 months and ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work in the community.
