KILBIRNIE is in shock after the unexplained death of an apprentice at Clydeport’s Hunterston Coal Terminal on Sunday night.

Craig Logan, 22, from the town was found dead in the cabin of a crane at the terminal at around 10pm.

It is thought that Craig – an apprentice mechanical engineer – was carrying out a repair and did not fall from the crane.

The terminal was closed on Monday as a Police Scotland investigation was carried out.

A spokesman for Peel Ports who own Clydeport said: “We can confirm that one of our employees, a 22-year-old engineer, has died while working on a crane at the Hunterston Coal Terminal around 10pm on Sunday night.

“The emergency services were called immediately and we are co-operating fully with the ongoing investigations by Police Scotland and other statutory authorities.

“Work at the terminal has been suspended and our thoughts are with his family and workmates.” A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 10pm on Sunday, February 15, the body of a man was discovered on a crane at the Hunterston Terminal, Largs.

“A post mortem will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of his death, however, at this time, his death is being treated as unexplained.” Craig’s friends paid tribute to the keen dance music fan and Rangers supporter on his Facebook page.

Graeme Berrie said: “If all is true I will never forget the good times. What a lad. Only happens to the good guys. Rest well Craig Logan.” From Ross McSerge Mckinnon: “Sad to hear the news of your passing young man. Not only were you a raver you were a grounded well respected young man. Respect to the raver from above. Sleep tight Craig.” Ex-James Watt Collge student Craig leaves behind an older brother Graeme, 26, who is also an employee at Hunterston coal terminal.

The tragedy is the second fatality to occur at the site in the last 15 months.

A fatal accident enquiry into the death of Colin Sutherland, 38, from Largs who died after a fall at the terminal in November 2013 is to be held in July.
