WORK has started on the new £4.8million Montgomery Court sheltered housing development in Kilbirnie.

Provost Joan Sturgeon took part in the cefremonial cutting of the first sod on February 4 to mark the next phase of the council’s Sheltered Housing Re-provisioning Programme.

The development, in Kilbirnie town centre, will provide 16 one-bedroom homes within a new sheltered housing complex and an additional eight two-bedroom amenity bungalows for vulnerable older people.

It will also create a social services hub, providing a range of services for tenants and older people living in the local community.

The existing sheltered housing unit will be demolished to make way for the new complex which has been specifically designed for 21st century living. It will include facilities such as a communal lounge and dining area, kitchen, a resident’ lounge, guest bedroom and landscaped courtyards.

The layout and design of the unit have been developed in partnership with Dementia Services at Stirling University.

Scheduled for completion in November 2016, it is expected that the development will seek formal ‘dementia friendly’ accreditation from the University, once constructed.

Provost Sturgeon said: “Protecting vulnerable people is one of the council’s most important responsibilities and this significant development demonstrates our commitment to provide the best possible care for our elderly.

“Once complete, the sheltered housing unit will allow us to support the tenants in their homes, while the on-site social services hub will provide care services to older people in the wider community.” WORK has started on the new £4.8million Montgomery Court sheltered housing development in Kilbirnie.
