FAST-FINGERED Beith man Breandan Vallance is off to Brazil this week – to try and solve a Rubik’s Cube in a world-record time.

Breandan, 23, can solve the cube with one hand and has a personal best time of 8.32 seconds.

He won the world title for “speedcubing” while still a teenager in Germany in 2009 and also took the title in 2011.

The latest championship begins in Sao Paolo next Friday and Breandan is among the favourites for the title.

Competitors will have to solve the puzzle - invented by Erno Rubik in 1974 – five times, with the fastest and slowest attempts removed for an average time to be taken.

The first Rubik’s Cube World Championship was held in Budapest in 1982 and was won by Minh Thai in 22.95 seconds. The current world record of 5.25 seconds is held by an American.

Breandon set his 8.32 second record at the Edinburgh Open back in 2013, confirming him as one of the world’s best.
