A COUPLE are up in arms after continuous flooding of their back garden has left damage to their slabs.

Mr and Mrs Wallace live in Meadowside and are both 76 and retired and have lived in their home for 12 years.

According to them the water runs into their garden and has caused extensive damage.  The Beith couple said: “It’s been on and off for the past 12 years.

"We’ve had countless bags of chips and grass ruined.  “We are the only ones that get flooded.”  North Ayrshire Council tried to sort this problem by putting in pipe work which would act as a drain but after this damage which was caused previously is still evident.  The council is responsible for repairing damage caused by the elements but finishes and fixtures within garden areas are a tenant’s own responsibility.

Any elderly or disabled tenants are asked to contact their Area Housing Officer for advice on this fact.

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “Mr and Mrs Wallace’s property sits at the bottom of a large hill and, as a result, rain water tends to run into their rear garden.

“The couple reported issues with flooding to us in June 2014 and we monitored the situation over the following months.

“This resulted in drainage works being carried out in the garden in December 2014 to alleviate the problem.

"Since these works were carried out, we’ve received no further complaints from the couple regarding flooding.  “Upon receiving this inquiry from the Ardrossan Herald we sent a Housing Inspector out to visit the property today (13 August) but found no evidence of flooding.

“Nevertheless, we will monitor the situation over the next few months and will carry out further works if required.”
