A 24-year-old man has this afternoon appeared in court after being charged with attempted murder following an incident in Kilbirnie at the weekend.

Jamie Thomas Thomson, was arrested on Saturday afternoon after a seven-hour siege at a house in Bankfaulds Avenue, Kilbirnie.

It culminated with Thomson being shot by officers after he allegedly fired a crossbow at those on the scene. It is believed Thomson is the first person to be shot by police since in the inception of Police Scotland in 2013.

Thomson was also charged with two counts of breach of the peace, assault and culpable and reckless conduct.

He entered no plea or declaration to the charges against him and he was remanded in custody and is expected to appear again at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on March 24.
