FORMER pupils and staff of Garnock Academy are being encouraged to relive the best days of their lives at a special reunion night.

This will be one of the last major events in the school before it closes and pupils transfer to the new Garnock Community Campus after the New Year.

The open night will be held on Tuesday, December 13, from 6pm to 7.30pm and all former pupils and staff are urged to come along, for one last opportunity to see the school, to share memories and reignite old friendships.

Head teacher Alan Dick said: “We’re marking the end of one era and the start of a brand-new one.

“This school will hold so many memories for thousands of people so it will be one last chance for them to relive some of their youth.

“There will be a few tears and plenty of smiles – but I’m sure everyone will have a great time.”

Garnock Academy first opened its doors back in 1972 with the amalgamation of Beith Academy, Dalry High School, Kilbirnie Central School and Speirs School. Now 44 years on, the school is preparing to close its doors for the final time.

The evening will include a tour of the school and a display of old photographs and artefacts, including the time capsule which will be retrieved soon, after having been buried for 31 years.

Councillor John Bell, Cabinet Member for Education, is himself a former pupil of Garnock Academy and was at the school between 1973 and 1979.

He said: “It’s a great opportunity for members of the community, former pupils and staff or anyone else whose life has been impacted by the school to reflect on the journey the school has made since 1972.

“I’m sure there will be many old colleagues and former pupils who will relish the chance to see the school one final time and perhaps rekindle some old friendships.

“As a former pupil, I know it will be an emotional evening as we take one last stroll down memory lane.”

Anyone interested in attending the open night should contact the school office with their name, size of party and a contact telephone number. Please call the school office on 01505 682685.

Meanwhile, work on the £40 million Garnock Community Campus at Beith Road, Kilbirnie, is in its final stages and the facility will open in early January.
