RESIDENTS of a Dalry street, including two pensioners, are concerned about severe flooding coming into their properties.

Great-grandparents Ian and Helen Wallace say that water, seemingly coming from the A737 road, is turning their Vennel Street garden into a quagmire.

And the couple are under added strain as 71-year-old Ian is fighting cancer and feels that he has been left to deal with combating the flooding alone.

Ian said: “Every time it rains we get flooded out the back door.

“You’ve got to put wellingtons on if you want to go into the garden. It’s coming in straight from the roads. It’s been doing this for over a year.

“The water goes into the solum of the building, undermining it.

“The biggest worry we’ve got is we’ve got grand-weans and great-grand-weans and they want to go into the back door and it’s a hazard.

“It just floods and the council don’t seem to be doing anything about it.

“Every time I phone they just keep

passing me back and forward to different departments.

“The council gave us sandbags. They deposited the sandbags but it was me who had to put them in place all by myself.

“I’ve been trying to dig holes to try and drain the water away, but I’ve been fighting cancer for two years.

“I can’t go out and do it.”

Ian and Helen’s next door neighbour, Billy Cullinane, sent the Herald video footage of the extent of the water in his garden.

He said: “This flooding is becoming worse and more frequent but unfortunately no one seems to be taking responsibility for rectifying this problem.

“Unfortunately, whenever any NAC employees come to inspect the problem the rain has usually stopped and the flooding subsided so I do not think anyone seems to fully appreciate the extent of this issue.

“Unless this problem is addressed soon it is only a matter of time before someone gets injured and property is damaged.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We were made aware of this issue last year and launched an investigation which showed a blockage in the water drainage system under the A737.

“As this is a trunk road, responsibility for this matter is with Transerv Scotland.”

The Herald contacted Transerv Scotland but they have yet to comment.
