A FUNDRAISER for a little boy who has spent the last few years in and out of hospital is taking place in Kilbirnie this weekend.

Eight-year-old Marc Smith has a congenital immunodeficiency disorder, which tragically claimed the life of his dad and uncle when they were in their 30s.

Marc has been in and out of Crosshouse and Yorkhill because of his condition, causing him to miss out on a lot of school. But after recently undergoing a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy, things are looking up for the brave Dalry Primary pupil and it is hoped that he will be well enough to return to school in August.

In tribute to Marc’s bravery and to reintegrate him with his classmates, family friends Derek Apperley and Ged Clarke are holding a golf tournament and fun day.

The pair, who are close friends of Marc’s mum Hailey, hope that the Marc Smith Fun Fund event will raise money to buy the eight-year-old some toys and give him a much-needed boost.

Derek, who is originally from Stevenston but now lives in Kilbirnie, said: “Marc’s had a really difficult eight years. He’s susceptible to all sorts of illnesses that are life threatening.

“He recently had a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy and was down in Newcastle in the bubble ward. It’s hoped that it’ll strengthen his immune system so he can live as normal a life as possible.

“The event’s to raise as much as we can just now because Marc’s treatment has so far been successful. He’s now able to get back to school, which he’s looking forward to.

“This is just a wee boost for Marc and Hailey, to give them a well-deserved break. Now he can do things and make good memories – happy memories.

“We’ve been going round clubs and businesses in the town for donations, bottles for the raffle stall. All the businesses and community support in Kilbirnie has been brilliant.”

Derek added that despite everything Marc has been through, the P4 pupil is always smiling.

He said: “He’s the happiest wee boy I’ve ever met. He’s an amazing wee guy and none of this is his fault. He takes it all on his shoulders, he doesn’t let anything get him down. He was there for his mum when his dad died. He’s old before his time.”

The fundraiser is on Sunday, May 28 from 12-2pm at Kilbirnie Place Golf Club and includes a tournament, facepainting, stalls, magicians, kids’ party and more. Entry is free.
