LADESIDE of Kilbirnie Bowling Club members were smiling in the sunshine after picking up the very first North Ayrshire Bowling League Challenge Cup.

On Saturday, the top four teams from the league season travelled to Ardrossan BC to play-off for the trophy for the first time.

Two-in-a-row league champions, West Kilbride, were hoping to pick up the double but would have to get past Saltcoats and then the winners of Kilbirnie and Kilwinning in the morning games.

West Kilbride managed to overcome Saltcoats in a tight affair with a 8-6 win and Kilbirnie made it across the line to win 10-4 against Kilwinning.

Following a short lunch break, the teams took to the green in the blazing sunshine and after five ends Kilbirnie were winning in all but one of the rinks and didn’t look like wilting in the heat.

After a hard-fought match, they prevailed with another 10-4 win and became the first side to pick up this cup after it was introduced for the league’s second season.

Ardrossan BC President Willie Hay made the vote of thanks and presented the trophy to the worthy winners.
